Actress Zsa Zsa Gabor, 93, underwent surgery to amputate half of her right leg after a serious gangrene infection spread to her bone.

Doctors treating her at a Los Angeles hospital decided on the procedure after an MRI revealed an infection in her leg had spread into the bone. Doctors said about three-quarters of Gabor’s right leg was removed in the surgery, which they described as successful and without complications.

Doctors have been treating Gabor at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center for two weeks without success, leading to Friday’s amputation of her right leg above the knee.

The Hungarian-born actress’s health has been deteriorating for a number of years. Gabor has used a wheelchair since she was partially paralyzed in a 2002 car accident, and she had a stroke in 2005. Gabor broke her hip and had replacement surgery in July, and has been hospitalized several times since for swelling in her legs and blood clots throughout her body. She was readmitted to hospital in the new year because a wound in her right leg had grown and “wasn’t healing any more”, her publicist John Blanchette said earlier this month.

Blanchette, said doctors only recently told Gabor of the possibility of amputation, and that this week they told her husband, Frederic Prinz von Anhalt, she had a 50-percent chance of survival.zsa-zsa-gabor-has-three-quarters-of-right-leg-amputated
