Each year, the American Cancer Society holds a Relay for Life to raise funds to help fight cancer. This year, forty two teams joined in on the event to raise money for research. Several individuals who joined the Relay for Life are celebrating personal success with fighting cancer, while others join simply to help with raising money for those who have been affected.
Connie Henry and her daughter Katelyn are participating in this event; both having a history of a cancer. Connie survived breast cancer just fifteen years ago, which was discovered during her second pregnancy. Her daughter Katelyn was diagnosed at the age of fourteen with ovarian cancer. Connie states that her mother and sister have also been diagnosed with cancer, which is why this event is a very personal experience for them.
By Friday morning, the Relay for Life event has already raised over $105,000. The hope is to raise over $165,000 during the entirety of the event, which will continue until Saturday morning. In addition to the relay, a silent auction, with items donated from several local businesses such as bouquets and gift baskets. This is the first year the Relay for Life has hosted a silent auction, and they hope to earn at least $750 to $1,000 in addition to the money earned through the relay.
There are also several craft programs being offered, and a carnival with food stands, activities, face painting, and inflatable games is also being held to raise additional money. Each wrist band for the carnival is just five dollars, and will be open from nine AM until 11 AM for individuals to participate.
