Dennis Hopper died of prostate cancer on Saturday. The legendary actor and director was 74 years old. He died at his home in Venice, California in the presence of family and friends.
He rose to fame with the release of the film “Easy Rider” which he co-wrote and was nominated for one of his two Oscars. His second Oscar nomination was for his performance in “Hoosiers.” His Hollywood career spanned six decades. His movie credits included “Rebel,” “Giant,” “The Sons of Katie Elder,” “True Grit,” “Blue Velvet” and Apocalypse Now”. He considered his role in “Blue Velvet” as his best performance.
Hopper also performed in over 100 television programs that ranged from “Gunsmoke” to “24.”
He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009 as he and his fifth wife, Victoria Hopper, began a long battle over divorce. The divorce papers were never finalized and Victoria stands to gain over 25% of the Hopper estate with the rest going to the Hopper children. Dennis Hopper is survived by four children, only one from his marriage to Victoria.
Dennis Hopper became increasingly known as a trouble maker becoming more erratic and abusive in his public and personal life. Many in Hollywood attributed his less attractive traits to his increasing intake of alcohol and drugs. His erratic and sometimes violent behavior alienated many directors and producers who later in his career refused to work with him. His ex-wives also confirmed his increasingly abusive and erratic behavior.
Dennis Hopper last appeared in public in March with his seven-year-old daughter and Jack Nicholson at his side as he accepted his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
