Indoor tanning is known to be a dangerous practice, but many choose to do it anyways. Now, as a result of the new healthcare reform law, people will be paying extra for damaging their skin. New restrictions regarding age may also be enforced in an attempt to curb tanning bed use.
Indoor tanning is a popular trend among teenage girls. Members of the Food and Drug Administration agency are proposing bans on the tanning beds that would make it impossible for people under the age of 18. Another proposal is to have a parent sign a release form for their teenagers to use indoor tanning facilities.
The newest tax being added to tanning services is steep enough to curb most people from using the tanning beds. A ten percent tax on tanning beds will go into effect on July 1st of this year. Teenagers will be forced to pay the higher prices or forego the harmful UVA rays the tanning beds emit.
The FDA released some startling statistics pertaining to those who use tanning beds. People under the age of 30 who use tanning beds, increase their risk of developing skin cancer by a staggering 75 percent. The number of young women who have developed melanoma tripled over the past 30 years.
