Another Hollywood star is fighting for his life in a battle with prostate cancer. Louis Gossett Jr. has announced he has been undergoing treatment and hopes to make a full recovery. He states the cancer was detected early, which gives him a better advantage in the life threatening battle.

Gossett became a superstar after his tough drill sergeant role opposite Richard Gere in “An Officer and A Gentleman.” The Oscar winning actor has appeared in numerous films, dating all the way back to 1961. He has been on Broadway in various roles as well as made several appearances on TV shows.

Gossett hopes his diagnosis will encourage other African Americans to get tested regularly. Early detection is the key to survival. Gossett hopes his announcement will shed some light on the taboo subject in the African American male community. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death among the group. Prostate cancer was once a death sentence but with advanced medical technology and early detection, it is curable.

Unfortunately, this silent killer does not generally cause any symptoms until it is in the last stages. Regular cancer screenings are the only way to catch the disease in its beginning stages.
