A number of over-the-counter drugs, including Tylenol, Rolaids, Benadryl, Motrin, and Aspirin, were recalled as the result of a strong mildew like odor that has led to a number of complaints by consumers.
These complaints, dating back as far as 2008, make claims that the drugs not only smell tainted, but have also caused more serious side effects in consumers including nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.
It is believed that a total of more than 60 million packages and 27 products are affected by this issue, which, the maker, Johnson and Johnson, blames on wooden pallets used in the transportation of packing materials. More specifically, it is linked to the presence of a chemical compound known as TBA, which is generated by fungi when it comes in contact with the fungicide 2,4,6-tribromophenol. The long term effects of TBA are not known. It is advised that if you have any of the medications affected by the recall you discontinue use immediately, and contact McNeil for further instructions to receive compensation. A complete list of recalled products can be viewed on the McNeil website at www.mcneilproductrecall.com. Also, those who believe they suffered side effects from taking effected medications should contact the FDA at www.FDA.gov/medwatch.
