In case you are not familiar with the Acai berry, it is a small reddish-purple fruit that is about an inch long and is the product of the Acai palm. This tree grows in the rain forests in Central and South America.

The Acai berry contains anthocyanins and flavonoids which provide a number of health benefits. These two substances are anti-oxidants that help protect the body and the body’s cells. Anthocyanins and flavonoids may also slow down the aging and disease process because they lessen the power of free radicals. Free radicals are byproducts produced by the body that can be harmful. Armando Guiterrez, a licensed nutritionist, said that along with the anti-oxidants, the Acai berry contains essential amino and fatty acids making it a good energy source.

The Acai berry contains the omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids. It is believed that they protect the cardiovascular system and may help lower cholesterol. The berry is also a good source of protein and fiber.
