The study, published November 9 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, looked at 106 overweight or obese people from across Australia. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups; one group was given a low fat, high carbohydrate diet including bread, pasta, rice, and the other one was put on high fat, low carbohydrate diet with more meat and dairy products for one year each. The participants’ weight was recorded at weeks eight, 24, 40 and 52, and their emotional state was evaluated via three standard questionnaires measuring aspects of mood, including anxiety, depression and anger. The daily intake of calories was restricted to 1,433 to 1,672 in both the diet programmes.

“Despite the consistency of official recommendations advocating a high-carbohydrate, low-fat, energy-restricted diet for obesity treatment, the obesity epidemic has led to widespread interest in alternative dietary patterns for weight management, including very low-carbohydrate ‘ketogenic’ diets that are typically high in protein and fat (particularly saturated fat),” the authors write.

The research team said both groups were less angry, less depressed and less confused after eight weeks of dieting. However, over the course of a year, those on the low-fat diet kept their improved mood, while those on the low-carbohydrate diet returned to previous moods. The researchers hypothesized that it may be that the low carbohydrate diet plan was too different from the way the dieters had eaten prior to the new diet plan, which could in turn cause societal stress.
