Good news fellas, for those of you with a low sperm count, some doctors are prescribing a very standard way to have a baby. Simply, have sex every day!
Couples who are attempting to have a baby are frequently told to have sex every other day, so that the man’s sperm count has time to recover, however scientists in Australia have found that this might lower some men’s fertility.
Australian fertility specialist David Greening enrolled 118 men whose sperm had a higher-than-normal level of DNA damage.
On average, the men’s DNA fragmentation index — a measure of sperm damage — fell to 26 percent from 34 percent, Greening told the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Amsterdam on Tuesday.
The men were told to relieve themsleves daily for seven days, and no other treatment or lifestyle changes were advised. Prior to starting, levels of DNA damage ranged between 15% and 98% DFI, with an average 34% DFI when measured after three days’ abstinence. When the men’s sperm was re-assessed on the seventh day, Dr Greening discovered that 96 men (81%) had an average 12% decrease in their sperm DNA damage, while 22 men (19%) and an average increase in damage of nearly 10%. The average for the whole group dropped to 26% DFI.
Though there was a significant drop in sperm numbers from 180 million to 70 million over the week, men were still within the normal “fertile” range.
