Cardinal Edward Egan is currently in the hospital, after complaints of stomach pain.
Egan, 77, checked into the hospital Saturday night, complaining of stomach pains. After a barrage of tests, physicians decided the Cardinal would require a pacemaker.
The surgery to implant the device has been postponed, due to the Cardinal’s poor health.
Cardinal Egan is set to retire this month from his position. He’s been at the head of the archdiocese of New York since the year 2000. The archdiocese serves 2.5 million Catholics in about 400 parishes. Egan has led it for nearly nine years.
Timothy Dolan, presently the archbishop of Milwaukee, is set to replace the Cardinal.
