Residents of Minneapolis are among the most fit in the country, says Men’s Fitness magazine. This news came after the magazine journeyed the country to rank cities from fit to fat and everything in between.

This was the 11th annual survey, and the results are always interesting and often surprising. Salt Lake City was at the top of the fit list, Colorado Springs was second and Minneapolis was right up there at number three. The magazine outlined several reasons why Minneapolis scored so high this year. Their Mayor, R.T. Ryback sets a positive example for residents by exercising 6 days a week. He also participates in fitness related public events regularly and much more than other mayors in the survey.

The resident’s of the city scored well in the survey because they don’t report watching much television, and are frequent participators in sports and other fitness activities. The city has a high amount of people who participate in running, walking and biking more than many other cities in addition to great access to basketball courts, gyms, tennis courts and golf courses.

Another important factor was the low amount of fast food or doughnut stores within city limits. However, ice cream shops are 40% more popular in Minneapolis than anywhere else.

Miami was voted the fattest city with around 62% of residents suffering from obesity and a raised risk of weight related health problems. The city also has three times as many fast food restaurants and doughnut shops than other cities.
