Enuresis is another term used for bed-wetting. Bed-wetting is a common issue among children who have not learned enough bladder control to sleep through the night without urinating. Enuresis can also be applied to losing control of the bladder throughout the day as well.

Most children learn how to control their bladders by the age of seven. If enuresis is still a problem after that age, a specialist may need to be consulted. Adults who lose control of their bladder are often referred to as incontinent.

There are two types of enuresis, primary or secondary. Children are frequently considered to have primary enuresis, meaning they never had total control of their bladder functions. A person is labeled with the secondary enuresis term if they had previously had control of their bladder functions for at least six months. Children who are going through difficult life situations may develop secondary enuresis. Typically secondary enuresis occurs in adults who are elderly or possibly have mental disorders.

Secondary enuresis is treated in a variety of ways, depending on the underlying cause. In some cases, psychological help may be needed. Adults that are handicapped or have developed Alzheimer’s will most likely have the condition throughout the rest of their lives.
